Stargazing on the Horizon |
Attended by hazy blue skies and the buzzing of cicadas, summer has settled in at SFI after a busy spring season. The flurry of tending many irons in the fire – including residential Outdoor Schools, our Birds & Brews fundraiser, and a bustling schedule of field courses – has briefly quieted. Thank you to everyone who joined us for an event or class!

We have some great free events on the horizon before the fall field course season kicks off. Join us September 21st for a dive into the fascinating History of the Illinois Valley with John Roth, and on August 12th for our annual Perseid Meteor Shower Watch Party! Come get reacquainted with your sense of wonder as we witness the marvelous Perseids, where a potential 110 meteors per hour may be viewed blazing across our night sky. Learn about the stars and planets with Ranger Brie from Oregon Caves National Monument, and enjoy a fabulous view of this yearly phenomenon away from light pollution in SFI's dark skies.

Plan to arrive between 8:30 and 9 PM to enjoy the gathering twilight and allow your eyes time to adjust for best viewing (this will also avoid having your headlights impact the night vision of other visitors already gathered on the lawn). Attendees should bring a camp chair or blanket to lay on, a warm beverage or water, curiosity, and a red-light flashlight if available. Follow the event on Facebook for details & updates: |

Season's Greetings from YEP |
It has been an exciting season for Youth Education Programming at SFI. At the beginning of May we held staff training for an incredible group of local outdoor educators, who have been helping to lead our outdoor programming and curriculum development through the spring and summer. |
|
|
Our crew of educators had an absolute blast leading Outdoor Schools this spring. Students learned about local watersheds, fire management and local flora and fauna, ate delicious foods, camped in SFI's yurts, and learned in the best classroom there is, the great outdoors! In the evenings we celebrated the experience and tapped into exuberance and play with skits, songs, and dancing by the campfire. We can't wait to experience more nature-fueled connection with these and other schools next year.
This summer we have also been having a great time hosting local schools and camps on our ropes course. The youth have impressed us with their ability to challenge themselves, work together, overcome obstacles and achieve success! |

A Note from the Executive Director |
Greetings Supporters of SFI,
We have been hard at work here this summer running youth programs, field courses, and hosting group rentals. Just a couple of weeks ago, I had the opportunity to host a reunion of my friends and their families here at SFI! It was such a wonderful time and our group of 25 truly enjoyed everything that SFI had to offer. With a group of children ranging from 10 months to 14 years old, SFI was able to play host to everyone's needs and interests, no matter the age. From a morning on our ropes course, a day trip to Jed Smith State Park, tide-pooling at the coast, to endless hours spent swimming in Deer Creek, our whole group had a magical time and created memories to last a lifetime.
SFI has played host to many groups just like mine over the years and has provided those same magical experiences time and time again. I always love hearing stories of parties and events where SFI has been the backdrop for so many long-lasting memories. As our facility ages, we continue to make improvements in order to continue sharing this incredible place for years to come while retaining the rustic and elegant charm of our lodge and grounds. We've recently completed the purchase of a new commercial food trailer to provide youth programs and facility rentals with a robust food service program, we've re-sided our lodge and replaced windows to be more energy efficient, and we are actively working on funding to expand accessibility across our site.
I hope you'll consider SFI for a future event you may be hosting, whether it's a team-building day, overnight retreat, or a big family reunion. You can find out more about facility rentals by clicking here. Did you know SFI is also an affordable and picturesque location for weddings as well?
As summer turns to fall and we prepare our annual appeal, we hope you'll consider supporting the work we are doing here at SFI by joining as a member or setting up a one-time or recurring donation. Your individual donations are critical to helping us provide educational and research opportunities for youth and adults of all abilities to connect with the Klamath-Siskiyou ecoregion. Join us today!

September 2nd & 3rd Sat 8 AM - 5 PM Sun 8 AM - 2 PM |
|
Spend two days in the field learning first-hand about shorebirds, the majestic California condor, and other species of interest. The first day will be spent visiting various shorebird habitats near the peak of their migration, including rocky shoreline, sandy beach, mudflat, and riverine gravel bar. The focus will be on learning to distinguish the various species from one another, as well as discussing their ecology and evolutionary relationships. The second day will be spent in the Bald Hills of northeast Humboldt searching for the magnificent, recently reintroduced condors.

| Join us for a FREE learning program and Q&A with instructor John Roth at SFI! The Illinois Valley is remarkably diverse. Per acre, it has one of the densest collections of different climates, soils, rock types, endemics, relicts, and Ameridian languages. It is also rich with evidence of ancient climates, seafloors, shorelines, and peoples. Explore why so many diversities coincide in this area, what was here before the valley, and answer the question, "Will our region travel to Alaska?"
