Spring's Verve in Full Effect |
A quick note about our newsletter - The Darlingtonia is becoming quarterly! Each season we'll share a broader update on life at the Siskiyou Field Institute - the experiences our students have shared, new connections made in our community, and what we're looking forward to. But don't worry, we'll still be sending short and sweet updates on upcoming programs on the months in between, so you can stay in the loop on SFI's field courses, youth programs, and community events!

We're truly feeling the energy of spring awakening here at SFI: Our Youth Education Program is excitedly gearing up for a return to overnight Outdoor School with 5th and 6th graders from across the state. Field courses are off and running, getting to know the birds, geologic history, marine life, and flora of the Klamath-Siskiyous. And, our campus is buzzing with improvements to our facility including putting new siding and windows on the Kendeda House, readying our low ropes course for use (shout out to the Oregon Master Naturalist class that will be helping us lay down mulch as a service project!), and sprucing up our gardens and lawns after the long winter.

A Note from the Executive Director |
Greetings Supporters of SFI,
The first rumblings of spring are upon us here at SFI and we are busy at work readying SFI for our busy season with programs and guests of all kinds coming up. To that end, I will be hosting a Spring Cleaning Work Party on Saturday, May 6th from 10AM-2PM. We will be renovating our campfire circle, clearing downed limbs, and doing some trail maintenance in preparation for folks getting out and exploring soon.
I will bring the coffee and some snacks if you can bring comfy work shoe, gloves and a water bottle. If anyone has a log splitter they would be willing to bring out that would be amazing. There is much to do, so bring a friend and let's help get SFI in tip top shape! Please see the flyer below and RSVP to Brandi at office@thesfi.org by Friday, May 5th. I hope to see you out there!

The confluence of the Coquille River and the Pacific Ocean is a fascinating area of multi-faceted ecosystems, teeming with a diversity of life that may be easy to miss from afar, but hold many stories to discover once you take a closer look. Participate in the online class first, then head out to the field to explore the major habitats of this area firsthand – from sandy beaches, to grassy dunes, to estuarine wetlands, to tidepools and rocky shores. Along the way you’ll learn about the interactions between the geology, botany, and wildlife - including birds! - of the area, plus some local human history.

Dive into the geologic history and origin of the Eastern Klamath Mountains, a complex and ancient assembly of rocks that is one of the eight major terranes of the Klamaths. You’ll practice identifying many common rocks, and learn what they tell us about the geologic processes that have shaped the region. This two-part course will also explore the ancient volcanic arc that is preserved in the rocks of the Eastern Klamath, the magmatic origins of regional gold deposits, and how stresses associated with tectonic movements contribute to the landslide hazard that plagues the region today. With Bill Hirt.

Explore marine biodiversity in the field, offshore on a research vessel, and up close in the lab at the Oregon Institute of Marine Biology. We’ll see benthic and planktonic marine organisms, pelagic and shore birds, as well as marine mammals, using scientific tools to get to know them better. We’ll also learn about ecological and oceanographic processes influencing the form, function, and survival of marine species, and discuss uses of marine resources by local communities, coastal tribes, and wildlife.
