What to Expect

Travel and Logistics

Each school is responsible for transportation to and from the Siskiyou Field Institute campus. We encourage each group to bring at least one personal vehicle in case of emergencies. Day program arrival time is 10:00 AM and departure is 1:30-2:30 PM. Transportation may be organized via carpool or bus. Buses are allowed to remain on SFI grounds for the entire program length.

Food

SFI does not provide food service or snacks for day trips. Please have students bring a school sack lunch and snack, or lunch from home. All students are encouraged to bring a water bottle – there are refill stations on site.

Activity Options

  • Low ropes course and team building: A Siskiyou experience like no other! The Ropes Challenge Course at SFI consists of three different elements: Diversity Trail, Vertical Spider Web, and Acid River Crossing. Under the direction of our trained facilitators, students connect the challenges they face while completing the course with real-life obstacles, and develop self-confidence, trust, and teamwork.
  • Siskiyou Flora and Fauna: The Klamath-Siskiyou Ecoregion is one of the most biodiverse coniferous forests in the world. Siskiyou Field Institute lies in the heart of this incredible landscape. Students will explore the rich forests and several variants of Flora and Fauna that call Siskiyou Field Institute their home. In this class, students will examine the importance of biodiversity, identify local flora and fauna, and engage with the importance of conserving unique ecosystems like those at SFI.
  • Art in Nature: In this station, students engage with the concept of “art”. What different mediums of art are they are familiar with, what artists do they know, what makes something art? Students will examine Andy Goldsworthy and other natural sculptors who make art from natural items, and then create their own art pieces using SFI nature elements. Nature watercoloring and poetry can also be included in this session.
  • Service learning (for 7th grade and up): Students will have the opportunity to help Siskiyou Field Institute be caretakers of the land through service projects. Hands-on projects such as invasive species removal, burn-piling, and trail-clearing can be great ways for older students to get experience working with the land and doing work that professionals in the forest service, firefighting, and land management careers actually do.

Cost

$15-20 per person for ropes course.

$200 service project or nature class flat rate.

Email Edmanager@sfi.org for scholarship opportunities and cost info.

Overnight Option

Is your school or youth group interested in extending the joy of learning at SFI? Make the trip an overnight one! School and youth groups can rent out sleeping yurts, dining pavilion, lodge and classroom for overnight use. See our Lodging and Facilities pages for the cost of these added items.
