Earthquakes, Floods and Drought – oh, my! – Postponed

May 15, 2020 @ 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm

Free

This event has been postponed until Friday, May 15th

What regional lake sediments can tell us about these hazards in the Klamath Mountains.

Presented by Ann Morey Ross, researcher, Ph.D candidate at Oregon State University and founder of  Cascadia Paleo.

Ann will report on her lakebed sediment research at Squaw Lakes in the Applegate Valley and other sites, which contain evidence of droughts, floods and earthquakes, including Cascadia quakes. She’ll describe how the flood deposits of 1964/5 and 1997 compare to the great atmospheric river event from 1862, and how the 1873 earthquake – thought to be ~M7 – produced much more regional damage than Cascadia quakes at Squaw Lakes. She’ll also present the suspected source of seismicity for this previously unknown earthquake hazard and suggest that more research is needed to protect inhabitants and livelihoods in this region.
