Summer Youth Camps
Elementary School Wilderness Skills Day Camp
July 9-11, 2014, Mixed-gender Camp, Ages: Entering 3rd-5th Grades
Fee: $20 for Evergreen Elementary School students, all others $100
Hours: 9 am-4 pm, Location: Deer Creek Center, Selma, OR
Instructor: SFI Youth Instructors
Kids will learn basic wilderness skills in this three-day camp. Lessons include fire and shelter building, challenge games, "leave no trace" principles and skits, hiking, tracking, service learning project, camouflage game, and swimming in Deer Creek. Most of the cost for Evergreen Elementary School students is underwritten by a 21st Century grant. Lunches and snacks included through the 21st Century grant. Middle School Wilderness Skills Overnight Camp
July 21-25th, Mixed Gender w/ some activities taught as single gender,
Ages: Entering 6th-9th Grades
Fee:$20 for Lorna Byrne Middle School students, all others $195
During this 5-day overnight camp kids will learn basic wilderness skills including fire and shelter building, nature crafting, outdoor cooking, hiking, animal tracking, and swimming in Deer Creek. This year we also have a new Ropes Challenge Course! Kids will learn about group communication and confidence building, while experiencing our fun and exciting high and low ropes elements. Most of the cost for Evergreen Elementary School students is underwritten by a 21st Century grant. Meals and snacks are included during this camp through a 21st Century grant.
Wilderness Backpacking Trip for Teens
July 15-17th, Mixed Gender
Fee: $90, partial scholarships may be available upon request
This three day trek into a local wilderness area is a great introduction for the beginner backpacker. Participants will be provided with backpacking gear and food. We will provide a packing list of personal items. Instruction will include proper packing, backcountry cooking, “leave no trace”, natural history of the region, and map and compass skills. Trips will be led by two SFI instructors, one of whom has current Wilderness First Responder certification and CPR. Siskiyou Field Institute is partnnering with Ashland High School for a second year to run an 8 day backpacking trip. Through the 21st Century Grant SFI will also offer an 8 day trip for Illinois Valley High School students. These trips offer students the opportunity to develop wilderness skills while bonding with their group in a wilderness setting. The experiences are also designed to allow students time for self-reflection and personal growth. Both trips include backpacking gear and food for the trip. A personal gear list will be provided. Three SFI instructors co-lead each trip; at least one instructor has a current Wilderness First Responder certification and CPR.
