This place-based class utilizes state-standardized curriculum to help students better understand features of serpentine geology and its impact on Darlingtonia californica,  a carnivorous plant that has adapted to serpentine soil and lives in the Deer Creek fen. In the spring class, students identify parts of flowering plants, some of which are endemic, learn botanical illustration basics and about soil chemistry through  testing. Fall students explore the diversity of tree species on site through a hands-on activity identifying characteristics.
