2019 Dune Ecology

Umpqua High Dunes

Instructor: Marty Giles
Date: Saturday, September 28, 2019
Location: Coos Bay area, Oregon

Tuition: $75 (includes shuttle to and from dunes area)
Tuition for Dune Ecology + Seaweed Ecology and Friday night intro: $165

This easy day excursion visits two locations to discover the whole range of dune environments, from beach to forest. We’ll spend most of the day in one of the non-vehicle sections of the Oregon Dunes visiting the wild and natural side of the dunes.  Along the way, participants will learn about the physics of sand as well as the diverse plant and animal communities and the challenges of sand-living.  Discover the ever-changing processes of the dunes formation and changes while you experience the vibrant high drama of the Oregon Dunes  (permitted by the ODNRASiuslaw National Forest, USFS). We will travel by van from a central meeting point to our two hike locations. Total hiking mileage for both locations: 2.5 miles with some hiking up to a high dune but mostly flat sand walking.
