2019 A Post-Fire Kalmiopsis Exploration

Kalmiopsis leachiana

Instructors: Lee Webb, M.S., Barbara Mumblo
Date: Sunday, April 21, 2019
Location: Meet at SFI, Selma, OR
Tuition: $60

Visit one of the most desirable wildflowers at its peak in bloom and witness the near Kalmiopsis Wilderness resprouting from last summer’s fire. We’ll hike five miles round trip along the Illinois River trail to view Kalmiopsis leachiana in bloom at York Creek. The Wilderness was named for these rare and beautiful flowers, first reported by botanist Lilla Leach in the 1930s. Along the way, we’ll stop to observe and learn about this location’s other endemic plants and their serpentine habitat. This foray involves hiking over moderate terrain with a 500 ft. elevation gain. We’ll meet at SFI for a brief introduction, then carpool about 18 miles west to the trailhead.
